When a building services practice is sold

MEP engineering firm for sale: what happens to the drawings

Updated

A sale or a retirement is the moment a building services firm's archive is most at risk of being shredded or forgotten. It can be licensed separately from the practice, or go with it to a buyer, provided the firm still holds the rights.

Records as part of the sale

A buyer of the practice takes the firm's copyright only if the sale agreement assigns it in writing. Where the archive is licensed for training instead, the firm can keep ownership and grant a licence for that use alone.

Before the servers are switched off

Export the models, calculations and issued sets before any subscription lapses. Trimble's offering terms say the customer will not have access to its data after the subscription term ends.

Organisations asking for records

Our buyer table lists the organisations whose own pages ask for engineering and project records, what each asks for and how a firm reaches it.

Describe the firm's design records

Your calculations and issued drawings are usually yours, unless a consultant agreement said otherwise. Tell us how the archive was made and we will reply about your own projects.

Your role on the projects

Where does the firm stand today?

  • A person answers every building services enquiry in writing
  • Nothing you enter reaches a listed software vendor or buyer
  • Leave drawings, calculations and client names out of this form
